Search Engines and Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
Search engine optimization, or SEO, is the process of making ones website content more search engine friendly so that it ranks higher in the search engine results pages (serps) for keyword searches and attracts more traffic in search engines.
Search Engines and Keyword Selection
One of the first things we do in our SEO process for any new project is a keyword analysis. Selecting the correct keywords for your business and optimizing for those keywords is incredibly important for ranking your website in the top 1 or 2 pages of search engines like Google, Yahoo, AltaVista, and Bing. According to a recent study:
- 62% of users click a link on the first page of search results
- only 23% of users move on to the second page
- 80% of unsuccessful searches are followed with keyword refinement
What do the results of this study mean to you and your website?
Most Internet users do not search through page after page of search results. If they do not find what they are looking for in the first 1 or 2 pages of the serps they will either give up, or refine their search using different or more precise keywords. If your pages do not show up on page 1 of the serps you are missing out on more than 75% of possible leads.
Keyword choice is very important and can make a huge difference in your search engine rankings. The most effective keywords can only be determined by careful analysis of historical search data, your industry, and your competition. Once the most effective keywords are chosen we can begin to optimize your website by writing, or re-writing, your website content to include these keywords in a manner that is most effective at raising your search engine rankings.
